Local News | Javea’s desalination plant is one of the most modern in the whole of Spain
Many people ask about rainwater deposits in villas that we have for sale. “Is there any problem with the water supply?” “Are there water shortages during summer?” The answer is absolutely no. In fact, Javea has one of the most modern desalination plants in Spain. Keep on reading to find out more.
Until the 1970s, Javea Townhall oversaw the water supply for the area. Supply was limited to the urban areas, Old Town and Port, and some surrounding areas such as Montañar I, Arenal, Portichol and Balcon al Mar. When building companies started developing more and more areas and expanding Javea, the water supply couldn’t keep up with the expansion and that’s when shortages started. It took around 3 years for new wells to be bought to solve the local water supply problem, and that was when the idea of a specific company to provide this service started to form.
AMJASA was created in 1977 to manage the complex water network, and the company has been gradually growing since then. Today it has more than 26,000 clients and it aims to assume the complete water cycle, including not only desalination but also managing the sewerage and reuse of water for irrigation and street cleaning.
During the 1990s, water supply in Javea came mainly from the Ocaive underground aquifer, just past Pedreguer. As building companies expanded the area and tourism increased greatly, added to the usual draught, the Ocaive aquifer dried out. Consequently, at the end of the decade Javea experienced a very difficult time regarding water supply and shortages became common. Some deposits were installed for people to collect water and in the end, salt water was supplied.
The critical situation led the municipality to make a decision that ended all problems and guarantees water supply without depending on rainwater - build a desalination plant.
Javea’s desalination plant started operating in Spring 2002, with a 27,000 litre capacity, expandable by another 6,800 litres. Today, this plant can even provide a water supply to neighbouring municipalities in need due to shortages. It has also caused an in improvement in the Marina Alta economy, as good quality water has meant an increase in tourism and people relocating to the area. It is also crucial to the construction industry, as good quality water means good quality concrete.
So, if you’re wondering if it’s best to buy a property in Javea or other areas, now you know why Javea is the best option. There is no such thing as water shortages here, not even during the peak season. Thanks to the desalination process, the quality of the concrete used to build properties is exceptional, so you are guaranteed to have a high quality villa.
We hope this information has helped you make a decision about Javea, and we are here to help you every step of the way in your search for a property. Contact us now, you will not regret it!
