Local News | Will you vote next Sunday?
The date is approaching, next Sunday will see local elections in all the national territory, and Javea is no exception. Every four years on the last Sunday of May the elections take place. All residents aged 18 and over that are registered as residents with Javea Town Hall are eligible to cast their vote. Resident non-national EU citizens are also eligible, as well as citizens of countries that have a reciprocal agreement with Spain, such as the United Kingdom. Have you already checked if you’re correctly registered and where you should vote?
The number of seats allocated to councillors is determined by the municipality’s population. Javea’s registered population falls into the category 20,001 – 50,000, which allocates 21 seats. Therefore, each political party submits a list with 21 candidates, though it is highly unlikely that all 21 candidates of the same political party will be allowed to sit. The person listed as candidate 1 is usually the party’s candidate for mayor of Javea, and the party must attract at least 5% of the votes to be allocated a seat.
In May 2019, around 55% of Javea’s electorate cast their vote, and the seats were distributed as follows:
- PSOE (3,873 votes, 45.32%) – 11 seats and absolute majority
- PP (1,832 votes, 21.44%) – 5 seats
- CPJ (995 votes, 11.64%) – 2 seats
- Compromís (827 votes, 9.68%) – 2 seats
- Cs (564 votes, 6.6%) 1 seat
- Podemos (407 votes, 4.75%) no seats.
Have you decided who you will vote for this time?
