Spain News | Why Living in Spain is a Wallet-Friendly Option Compared to UK, USA, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland

Please bear in mind that the figures and statistics included are averages and may vary according to the city you live in.

Spain has long been a popular destination for tourists seeking sun, sea, and culture. However, as you probably know, it is not just a holiday hotspot. In recent years, Spain has gained attention as an attractive place to live due to its affordability compared to countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. With its lower cost of living and various economic advantages, Spain has emerged as a wallet-friendly option for individuals and families looking to make a fresh start. Let's delve into the latest statistics to understand why Spain is becoming an increasingly popular choice for expatriates.

First of all, the cost of living in Spain is significantly lower than in several other countries in Europe and the United States. When we examine the estimated monthly costs, we can clearly see the financial advantages of living in this beautiful Mediterranean country.

For a family of four, the estimated monthly costs in Spain, excluding rent, amount to 2,347.8€. In contrast, the estimated monthly costs for the same family in the UK are 2,961.7€ - a difference of 614€. Similarly, the estimated monthly costs for a family of four in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany are 3,209.3€, 3,102.1€, and 3,144.0€, respectively. Comparatively, Spain offers significant savings in monthly expenses for families.

Even for single individuals, the cost of living in Spain proves to be highly attractive. A single person's average monthly costs in Spain, excluding rent, amount to 669.9€. On the other hand, the average monthly costs for a single person in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany are 868.3€, 1,031.0€, 918.5€, 884.5€, and 922.2€, respectively. Once again, Spain emerges as the most affordable option for single individuals in terms of monthly expenses.

In addition, one significant contributor to the lower cost of living in Spain is the affordable housing market. Although rent prices in Spain have been slightly increasing for the past year, especially in big cities, rent prices in Spain are, on average, 56.0% lower than in the United States, making it an attractive option for those seeking affordable accommodation. Comparatively, rent prices in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany are 49%, 56.2%, 7.6%, and 20% higher, respectively, than in Spain. By choosing to live in Spain, individuals and families can save a substantial amount on their monthly housing expenses, and even save enough to pay deposit for a property if they can get a mortgage!

Last but not least, when considering the overall cost of living, consumer prices are an essential aspect to examine, including rent, as well as the local purchasing power. In France, for example, consumer prices are 38.5% higher than in Spain, without rent; if we include rent though, consumer prices in France are 31.7% higher. Rent prices alone in France, on the other hand, are 13.6% higher in comparison. These statistics highlight the favourable consumer prices and purchasing power that Spain offers in contrast to its European neighbours.

Comparing consumer prices and purchasing power with other countries, we found that Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom have higher consumer prices than Spain. In Belgium, consumer prices are 32% higher than in Spain, while the Netherlands and the United Kingdom show a 35.2% and 28.1% difference, respectively. In terms of purchasing power, Spain outperforms Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom with a higher local purchasing power.

All in all, this year’s figures clearly show that living in Spain is a wallet-friendly option compared to the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. With a lower cost of living, including affordable housing and favourable consumer prices, Spain provides individuals and families with the opportunity to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle while keeping expenses in check. Whether it's the vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, or warm climate, Spain continues to attract expatriates seeking an affordable and fulfilling life.
