Spain News | Digital Nomads will soon be welcome to Spain with their own visa
Spain may soon become the latest country in Europe to launch a Digital Nomad visa, and we think this is fantastic news. There are several kinds of visa that allow you to live in this sunny country for a certain period of time, but we were lacking a permit that allowed non-EU citizens to move to Spain without an employment contract from a Spanish company. Although there is no specific launch date, we know the date is close.
Digital nomads have been around for a while, but it’s only recently that they have become more and more visible, especially with new technologies being essential for work nowadays and after the pandemic. People have realized that we can (mostly) still do our jobs whether we go to an office 8 hours a day or not, and workers have got back hours they used to spend commuting to work. Although not perfect, remote work seems to have improved our work-life balance, and since companies notice that a happy worker means better performance, that’s what governments intend to maintain. And here’s where the Digital Nomad visa comes into scene.
The Spanish Digital Nomad visa will be mainly addressed to freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote workers, all of whom must deal with activities that can be completed remotely using technology. People that can run a business registered in another country will also be eligible for this visa. Applicants must not be employed by a Spanish company and cannot be hired by one for the duration of the visa (should this happen, the visa would change but you can still live in Spain.
Initially, the visa will be issued for one year, but it may be possible to extend it for another year.
So, what requirements do you need to meet to apply for a Spanish Digital Nomad visa? In addition to those mentioned above, pay attention to the following:
- Be a non-EU citizen
- Be a freelancer, remote worker, entrepreneur not hired by a Spanish company
- Have an income of EUR 1000 – EUR 3000
- Must register with local authorities within 30 days of arrival
- Hold a valid passport for the duration of the visa
The Spanish Government will probably request certain documents when you apply for this visa, such as a valid passport, and employment contract or other documents that prove your employers and/or clients are abroad, a bank statement to show sufficient funds and proof of accommodation, but this is still to be determined when the law is passed.
The Digital Nomad visa is finally allowing non-EU citizens to relocate to Spain for a short period (at least initially) to get a taste of the Spanish lifestyle. There are still other options until the Start-up Law is approved, such as the Golden visa, but it allows to be a permanent resident and is a bit more difficult to obtain, as the applicant needs to have spent at least EUR 500,000 in assets here. With this new option, a first hand experience of what living in this beautiful country is now available to you and who knows, you might even want to stay in Spain for longer! In which case, you would of course need a place to live, and that’s what we can help you with finding your dream home in this fantastic town.
