Local News | Easter in Jávea (Xàbia): What to See and Do
Easter in Jávea is a mix of deep rooted religious traditions and vibrant cultural events. It's a great time to explore the town’s heritage and atmosphere. As Holy Week (Semana Santa) approaches, both locals and visitors can experience a variety of processions, ceremonies, and festivities that reflect the spirit of this coastal town.
Semana Santa Processions and Religious Events
The main focus of Easter in Jávea is the Semana Santa processions, which run from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. These events feature people in traditional robes walking through Jávea’s old town, carrying religious statues. It’s a powerful and moving experience that highlights the town’s spiritual side.
Here are a few key moments to catch:
- Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025): The blessing of the palms, followed by a procession from the Convento de las Agustinas (Carrer del Convent, Jávea old town) to the Iglesia de San Bartolomé (Plaça de l'Església, Jávea old town).
- Good Friday (April 18, 2025): A dawn Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), organized by local youth, starting at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto (Avenida Virgen de Loreto, Jávea Port) and continuing down Calle Caleta (Jávea Port).
- Easter Sunday (April 20, 2025): Multiple church services throughout the day to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, held at local churches including Iglesia de San Bartolomé and Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto.
Easter Market and Craft Fair
Alongside the religious events, Jávea’s historic centre (Plaça de Baix, Plaça de l'Església, and surrounding streets in Jávea old town) hosts a traditional Easter Market and Craft Fair. It’s a fun and relaxed place to wander, with stalls selling handmade crafts, local food, and workshops for all ages. It's also a great chance to meet local artisans and try some regional treats.
Mar de Jávea Festival
Adding a modern twist to the Easter celebrations, the Mar de Jávea Festival takes place on April 18 and 19, 2025, at Recinto de la Fontana (near Arenal Beach, Avenida de la Fontana). This popular music festival will feature famous artists such as Alex Ubago, Álvaro de Luna, Dani Fernández, DJ Nano, Juan Magán, Los Secretos, and Nil Moliner. With more than 18 hours of live music, great food, market zones, and activities for all ages, it’s expected to draw over 16,000 people. It’s also a big boost for local tourism and businesses.
Traditional Easter Treats
Easter in Spain also means enjoying some delicious seasonal food:
- Mona de Pascua: A sweet cake often topped with a hard boiled egg or chocolate decorations. Families usually enjoy it on Easter Monday picnics.
- Torrijas: Think Spanish style French toast. Bread soaked in milk, sugar, cinnamon, and honey. A perfect sweet treat.
- Buñuelos: Small fried doughnuts that might be filled with chocolate or cream. You’ll find them in most local bakeries during Easter.
