Spain News | Tipping in Spain, What to Know When You’re in Javea
Tipping in Spain can be a bit of a mystery for visitors. Unlike some countries where tipping is expected and often added automatically, in Spain it’s usually a voluntary gesture, and it’s often more modest than you might be used to. Still, showing appreciation for good service is always welcome, especially in a place like Javea, where many businesses are small, family run, and staff work hard to make your experience enjoyable.
At Javea Home Finders, our team often gets asked by clients and new homeowners how tipping works here. So, we thought we’d share some guidance, along with our own tipping habits, to help you feel confident the next time you're out at a restaurant or café.
So, do people tip in Spain?
Yes, but usually in small amounts, and not always. In most casual cafés or tapas bars, rounding up the bill is perfectly acceptable. If your coffee costs €1.80, leaving €2 is a friendly gesture. For more formal meals or attentive table service, a tip of around 10%-12% is considered generous and well received, though still optional.
Unlike in some countries, a service charge isn’t usually included in the bill in Spain, so if you feel the service was good, leaving a tip is a nice way to say thanks.
How we tip: The Javea Home Finders Team
We’re locals, and regulars at many of Javea’s fantastic cafés and restaurants, so we thought we’d share a few of our personal tipping preferences:
Jo:
“If I’m given table service, I always tip 10%, more or less, I usually round it up to the nearest €5 or €10. I always tip in cash, even when I pay by card. I just feel more confident it’s going directly to the staff. I’m sure most businesses pass on card tips fairly, but they get taxed, and staff might end up with less.”
Amber:
“I normally give up to €5 for drinks depending on how long I’ve been there. For table service with food, I’ll tip around 10%, and if I’m at the bar just having drinks, €2 is about right. I try to keep some cash on me for tips, but it’s good to know most places accept tips by card these days too.”
Jessica:
“I usually tip between 10-12%, the same as I would back in the UK. As service charges aren’t included here, I think it’s important to leave something for good service. I make it a habit, even just rounding up the bill can make a difference to someone’s day.”
Oscar:
“If I’m happy with the service, I’ll tip 10-15%, and even on take away orders I’ll usually add 10%. Like Jo, I’ll round up to the nearest €5 and always leave the tip in cash, even if I’ve paid the bill by card.”
Freya:
“Having worked in hospitality, I know how meaningful it is to be recognised for good service. I always try to tip fairly, a few euros for drinks, and around 10% for meals. I prefer cash, but if I haven’t got any, I’ll still tip on the card if the option’s there.”
Tipping in Javea, Our Local Insight
Javea is a relaxed town, and while tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s genuinely appreciated by local staff, especially in small businesses. Whether you’re enjoying a sunset drink on the Arenal, a leisurely lunch in the port, or a quick café stop in the old town, a few euros as a thank you will always go down well.
Cash is king when it comes to tips, but many places now offer the option to tip by card too. If you're unsure whether the tip will go directly to the staff, feel free to ask, locals are happy to explain.
Quick Tipping Tips for Javea Visitors:
- Casual cafés & bars: Not expected, but rounding up or leaving small change is kind.
- Table service (restaurants): Around 10% is considered generous.
- Drinks at the bar: Leave €1-2, depending on how long you’ve been there.
- Takeaway or delivery: Optional, but a small tip is always appreciated.
- Cash tips go further: Many locals prefer to tip in cash, so the staff gets it directly.
- No service charge on the bill: So any tip you leave is your own gesture of appreciation.
Whether you’re just visiting or settling into life in Javea, understanding the local tipping culture can help you feel more at home. It’s not about rules or pressure, just about recognising good service when you see it.
